2010 CERT class scheduled for March 8, 2010

January 22, 2010;

Austin County Judge Carolyn Bilski, in her role as Emergency Management Director, has announced a 2010 CERT class scheduled to start Monday, March 8, 2010, 7 P.M. at the Gordon Memorial Library in Sealy.

The training  received will give an overview and better understanding of how the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) works during a variety of disasters that can affect our community.  Ten 3 hour sessions will be scheduled over the next three months including one make-up session.  Currently local government prepares for everyday emergencies,  however, during a disaster, the number and scope of incidents can overwhelm conventional emergency services.

As an Austin County Team Member you will be able to assist the CERT program, protecting yourself, your family, your neighbors and your neighborhood in a variety of emergency situations.  CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens may initially be on their own and their actions can make a difference.  While people will respond to others in need without the training, one goal of the CERT program is to help our citizens do so effectively and efficiently without placing themselves in unnecesary danger.

For additional information and registration call Ray Chislett, Emergency Management Coordinator at 979-865-5911.  Forms are also available at www.austincountycert.com.

The program is funded by a Homeland Security Grant.  This is an ideal training opportunity for School Coordinators, Church Emergency Volunteers, Civic Group Leaders, Shelter Coordinators, and any individual who wishes to be part of an elite group of volunteers.
